A 16-year-old boy accused of shooting and killing his mother’s boyfriend last week was denied bail during his first court appearance on Monday.
Korion Rockwell faces charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony in connection with the Dec. 5 killing of 41-year-old Charles Primes. An affidavit in the case remains sealed, but prosecutors offered a few details of the fatal shooting in court Monday.
Omaha resident Charles Primes, 41, was found dead Thursday night on a sidewalk near the Village Park Apartments at 6836 S. 27th St.

According to the Omaha Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Village Park Apartments near 28th and Harrison Streets at about 8 p.m. on Dec. 5 to reports of a shooting. Outside on the sidewalk they found Primes with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.
After speaking with witnesses and obtaining video footage, according to prosecutors, police discovered that Rockwell, Primes and Rockwell’s mother were “engaged in an argument” that resulted in Rockwell’s mother walking outside of the apartment complex with Primes following behind her.

Primes had his back to Rockwell when Rockwell allegedly pointed a gun to the back of Primes’ head and shot once. After Primes fell to the ground, prosecutors said, Rockwell shot him three more times.
Rockwell’s attorney, Nicholas Yost, requested that Douglas County Court Judge Marcela Keim set a bail amount, given the fact that he has no criminal record and turned himself in to police. There are also “some self-defense issues” at play, Yost said.
Keim sided with prosecutors in denying bail. Rockwell is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 27.
