Scott Forbes’ trust pays off in North Carolina’s Game 2 win

As North Carolina players funneled back to the locker room after Sunday’s CWC championship series win over Oklahoma, one stopped at the door and left a group of school administrators with a message that has become the Tar Heels’ late-season rallying call.
“They counted us out like they always do,” the unnumbered player said.
With its season on the line at Schwab Field, the Tar Heels played like a team comfortable with being uncomfortable. Their calm in the thick of the storm made sense — they had been in this position several times this season.
Throughout the spring, foes have had chances to land the knockout blow and win weekend series. Three times — including in its home super regional against Southern California — North Carolina forced, then won, a decisive Game 3.
The Tar Heels found themselves against the wall, again, their season on the brink one step short of a national title. However, with their chances bleak, North Carolina battled its way to a 6–2 win, forcing Monday’s decisive Game 3.
“For some reason, I had a weird feeling on Friday when we played Southern California (in Game 2), but I woke up with a better feeling that Saturday (Game 3),” coach Scott Forbes said. “I felt the same way this morning, but I felt that way because I know our players.”
Despite the circumstances, Forbes knew his players weren’t going to go down without a fight. All they needed was an opening.
Oklahoma obliged, letting the Tar Heels off the hook early in Sunday's game.
The Sooners took a 2–0 lead in the first inning, however, UNC responded with three runs in the third a two-run triple by Jake Schaffner, who later scored on a wild pitch.
The Heels added one run in the fifth and two more in the seventh.
“Our guys did a great job of just putting their heads down and not panicking,” Forbes said. “We talk about it all the time — being process oriented, having a next-play mentality, just playing every pitch. When you look up, whatever happens, happens. We did a good job of that.”
Sunday's game played out similarly to the last time UNC faced elimination against the Trojans. It fell behind early and used a late-game comeback to reach Omaha.
While North Carolina didn’t need walk-off heroics this time, it battled its way to a win in similar fashion.
The Tar Heels drew nine walks — four alone by Carter French. They kept the lineup moving with singles and got big hits from Schaffner, along with home runs from Cooper Nicholson and Owen Hull.
“I think we’re a tough group offensively,” Nicholson said. “We put together some gritty at-bats. We got on base a ton. That’s just showing what our offense is like.”
For UNC, Sunday's win gave it life. It created momentum heading into Monday’s Game 3 — and with it, one more chance to show why nobody can count the Tar Heels out.
“This is the position we all want to be in,” Forbes said. “I sure as heck do. And our players want to be in it. Just embrace it, enjoy it, and go after it.”
