Don't buy the media spin on inflation
Since affordability is such a prominent issue in this fall’s elections, most of the commentary by the media on how President Donald Trump is doing on controlling inflation is negative. That comes as no surprise as their negative bias when it comes to Trump is predictable.
In Tom Gdisis’ Public Pulse article titled “Ricketts makes excuses for Trump's failures,” the claim is made that the Trump administration “is failing on inflation” and “inflation is higher since Trump took office.” This is a typical narrative that I have read elsewhere. But is it true? And has our conflict with Iran caused inflation to spike?
Inflation in 2026 since the Iranian conflict began has averaged 3.6%. During a similar five-month time span in 2022, inflation under President Joe Biden averaged 8.6%. It peaked at 9.1% during the prior administration. Political pundits tried to put “lipstick on a pig” by calling Biden’s inflation “transitory.” These inflation percentages are per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most recently consumer prices declined 0.4% in July and inflation fell from 4.2% to 3.5%, the sharpest monthly decline in six years.
Pundits employed by the media should be hired to give expert commentary on issues sans political spin. However, when it comes to Donald Trump, commentary almost always has a negative tilt to it no matter what the facts are.
So be careful on drawing conclusions based solely on the opinions of others unless there are facts offered as well.

Why I'm voting for independent Mark Cohen in CD3
I am a lifelong south-central Nebraskan, raised on a small farm by parents who were Eisenhower Republicans. They instilled in us a deeply rooted faith, the value of education, care and concern for our neighbors, and a love of the arts.
Life's journey also shapes our values and views. Some of my journey includes being an employee of Sperry New Holland in Lexington until its closure during the 1980s farm crisis, a stay-at-home mom and a second-career public school educator in Lexington, now retired. As a lifelong learner willing to grow, grapple with change and ask questions, I engage politically the best I can in the space and place where I find myself, with a firm belief that politics translates to policy, and policies impact each of us and our neighbors.
"We the people" is a core American democratic principle. The majority of Nebraskans aspire to it and are wise, kind and hardworking people who provide for their families, support their communities and pay attention to whether their neighbors are thriving.
We vote for public servants with the expectation that they will meet with us, listen to us, study our issues and work to enact policies that serve the common good. Democracy works when we are informed, engaged and vote.
Nebraska's 3rd Congressional District, currently represented by Adrian Smith, has a choice this November. Nebraskans want leaders who bring out the best in people. I will be voting for independent NE-3 candidate Mark Cohen.

Fund the need, stop the fraud in Medicaid
Nebraska's Medicaid Aged and Disabled Waiver helps older adults and people with disabilities remain safely in their homes and communities.
The Nebraska Auditor of Public Accounts' recent report identifies serious concerns involving billing, documentation, eligibility and provider practices. These problems deserve attention. But providers who follow the rules should not pay the price for those who do not.
Reputable providers train caregivers, document services, follow authorizations, use electronic visit verification and maintain strong internal controls. We support accountability and agree that services must be provided as authorized, accurately billed and consistent with each individual's assessed needs.
We also believe caregiver rates should be reasonable, standardized and based on an individual's needs, not individually negotiated.
The audit tested 47 participants selected based on risk factors. Its findings do not demonstrate that these practices represent the majority of Nebraska providers. Nebraska should target fraud, not create more rules for everyone.
The auditor's data demonstrates why funding must follow need. Of 7,316 participants, only 125, or 1.7%, received more than $200,000, yet they accounted for approximately $30 million in payments. People have vastly different levels of need, and funding should reflect those differences.
Nebraska can protect taxpayer dollars while supporting quality care. Find the bad actors. Stop the fraud. Fix the system.
Then let responsible providers continue helping Nebraska's older adults and people with disabilities live safely, independently and with dignity in their communities.

In his TV ads, Gov. Pillen promises to fix the broken system in our state. Yet when we consider that Nebraska has had a Republican governor and a Republican majority in the Unicameral since 1999, when are we going to ask ourselves: Enough is enough. It's time for change?
