Lincoln has seen a rise in hotel construction recently. Check out the early Lincoln hotels and motels that were once the premier places to stay while visiting the growing city.
Savoy Hotel
The Sam Lawrence Hotel had many predecessors over the years. The Savoy Hotel was once called home by vaudeville actors who worked at the Orpheum Theater on 12th and P streets during the early 1900s.

Capital Hotel
Originally opened in 1869 as a drugstore, the Capital Hotel on 11th and P streets began taking reservations just one year later.

Arlington Hotel
The Arlington Hotel, shown here in 1885, housed many guests throughout the years. Today, Barry's Bar in the Haymarket occupies the site of the old Arlington Hotel.

Lindell Hotel
This early picture of the Lindell Hotel shows the balcony from which Williams Jennings Bryan gave his first major speech. The hotel was demolished in 1968 to make way for a First National Bank building.

Sam Lawrence Hotel
In October 1986, city officials were given the authority to buy property in the block bounded by 10th, 11th, P and Q streets. This led to the demolition of the Sam Lawrence Hotel and was the first step in a downtown redevelopment project.

Savoy Hotel
The Savory Hotel in 1926 was an expanded version of the three-story Ledwith House, which was built about 1887 on the northwest corner of 11th and P streets.

The Grand Hotel
The Grand Hotel at 12th and Q streets in Lincoln was once called home by a variety of people. The 87-room, four-story hotel, originally known as the Bond Hotel, was built in 1880 and lasted for 78 years before being declared unsafe in 1958.

Victoria Hotel
The Victoria Hotel, a landmark from the last century, was being prepared for demolition in 1961. The hotel site on 16th and O streets became the location of a one-story building.

Original Cornhusker Hotel
The corner of 13th and L has been home to The Cornhusker hotel for almost a century. In 1978, the original Cornhusker hotel shown here closed, and four years it was demolished and replaced by the new 10-story, 304-room Cornhusker Hotel.

The Clayton House Motel at 10th and O streets received a facelift inside and out in 1985.

Crossroads Motor Hotel
In 1962, W.D. Ray transformed a insurance company on 10th and O streets into the Crossroads Motor Hotel. Financial difficulties forced the property to be offered at public action just two years later.

House of Hospitality
The Hospitality House on 1740 E St. opened during World War II as a place where soldiers and their families could stay for up to a week. The house was similar to a hotel, because it charged a minimal fee for expenses.

In 1952, the Portor Hotel System exercised their option to buy the Nebraskan Hotel at 230 N. 11th St.

Colonial Inn Motel
In 1961, the Colonial Inn Motel completed its $245,000 expansion project. The motel had 34 new units in addition to 20 that were renovated and remodeled.
