AppleJack Festival

This year's AppleJack Festival in Nebraska City is spread out over the four weekends of the apple harvest season, so there will be smaller crowds each weekend. The first AppleJack weekend will be Sept. 19-20 with a parade, extreme bull riding, water barrel fights, classic cars and, of course, plenty of apples and apple goodies.

Hunting

Deer archery season is going on now, and firearm season runs Nov. 14-22. Those wanting to try out hunting also can hunt turkey (Sept. 15-Jan. 31) and elk (bull firearm season is Sept. 21-Oct. 31 and early antlerless season is Aug. 15-Oct. 31). Antelope firearm season is Oct. 10-25, and doe/fawn late season begins Nov. 1. Bighorn sheep season is Dec. 1-22, and squirrel season is Aug. 1-Jan. 31. Cottontail/jackrabbit season is going on now through Feb. 28, grouse hunting is in season until Jan. 31, and pheasant, quail and partridge season is Oct. 31-Jan. 31. Pumpkin patches

You finally don't need to dodge game times and can devote a full day to a trip to a pumpkin patch. Two in the area, Roca Berry Farm and Vala's Pumpkin Patch, offer enough activities to spend much of the day and part of the night there. Roca Berry opens Sept. 17. Vala's is even having its first apple festival Sept. 4-7.

PBA Wrangler Invitational

The Professional Bull Riders Wrangler Invitational will be in Lincoln for the first time. The event is Oct. 3-4; more information on the Pinnacle Bank Arena website.

Travel Nebraska

Blanketed with mystery and volcanic ash, Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park near Royal depicts the life and death of creatures nearly 12 million years ago. It's just one of the great places to head on a road trip through Nebraska. Some the many options at Nebraska Tourism's site.

Junk Jaunt

Head over to the Nebraska Junk Jaunt. This year's event is Sept. 24-26, mostly along Highways 11, 91 and 2 in the Sandhills. The Junk Jaunt website says it's "much more than just a garage sale. It is 350 miles of great scenery, friendly people, good food and treasures galore." There will be about 450 vendors in 2020.

Walking or riding the trails

Lincoln has 131 miles of hard surface and rock trails. There also are horse trails in Pioneers Park and Wilderness Park. Go to Lincoln Parks and Rec's trail site for details. Many state parks have trail systems as well; check this Game and Parks list for some popular choices to try and maps.

Lancaster Event Center shows

The Lancaster Event Center at 84th Street and Havelock Avenue has horse shows booked every weekend in September, plus a dog show Oct. 2-3.

Fishing

Fishing is popular anytime, but fall offers some great weather to do it in. Nebraska has about 450 lakes and streams open to public fishing. You'll need a permit, and information is available at the Game and Parks site. You can also find a list of the best places to fish in Nebraska.
