In 1968, Presley had his "comeback" in an NBC-TV special highlighted by a performance with a small combo while clad in now-iconic black leather. (Courtesy photo)
James Burton (from left), Wanda Jackson and Raul Malo, former singer of The Mavericks, are shown with an Elvis birthday cake before a panel discussion at the South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas this month. Burton played with Elvis, Jackson toured with him and dated Presley for a year in the 1950s, and Malo was influenced by him. "Elvis was the first one who made me want to play guitar or sing. I remember the ‘Aloha from Hawaii' special like it was the Apollo landing," Malo said. (Associated Press file photo)
