Baby Boomer Music Dylan

Baby Boomer Music Dylan

Bob Dylan, “Highway 61 Revisited,” 1965. Bob Dylan, who is five years too old to be a baby boomer, never wanted to be the voice of a generation. But, to some measure, he was. With “Highway 61 Revisited” Dylan went rock with a striking set of songs that began with "Like a Rolling Stone," the greatest rock 'n' roll song ever.

Baby Boomer Music Beatles

The Beatles, “Revolver,” 1966. There’s got to be a Beatles record on any baby boom album list. The popular choice is “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” But 1966’s “Revolver,” in my view, is the band’s masterpiece.

Baby Boomer Music Beach Boys

The Beach Boys, “Pet Sounds,” 1966. One of the most influential records of all time, Brian Wilson’s masterpiece took rock to a new level, with orchestration of unusual instruments, layers of vocal harmonies, stylistic variation in its neo-psychedelia put together with groundbreaking product.

Baby Boomer Music Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye, “What’s Goin’ On,” 1971. This powerful, era-defining concept album comes from the point of view of a Vietnam veteran who sees little but suffering and injustice when he returns home. It’s brilliantly played by the Funk Brothers, Motown’s house band, and sung by Gaye at his most soulful.

Baby Boomer Music Carole King

Carole King, “Tapestry,” 1971. Brill Building songwriter Carole King became the leader of the singer-songwriter movement of the ‘70s with this multiple Grammy-winning, hit-filled, mega-selling album that also opened doors for many other female artists.

Baby Boomer Music Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones, “Exile on Main Street,” 1972. Like The Beatles, there’s got to be a Stones record on the list. So the question is from the great mid-60s period or from the late ‘60s/early ‘70s peak. Let’s go with the latter and the dark, drug-drenched double album masterpiece.

Baby Boomer Music Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen, “Born to Run,” 1975. Bruce Springsteen is the iconic baby boom rocker, but choosing one of his records isn’t easy. There’s the big seller, “Born in the U.S.A.” and my personal favorites, “The River” and the stark “Nebraska.” But “Born to Run,” his breakthrough album, is the most representative and best choice here.

Baby Boomer Music The Ramones

The Ramones, “Ramones,” 1976. There’s got to be a punk record here. After all, punk is the rock ‘n’ roll form created almost exclusively by baby boomers. There are plenty of possibilities, including the Sex Pistols and The Clash. But “Ramones” is the record that started it all -- and it’s still big fun.

Baby Boomer Music Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson, “Thriller,” 1982. The biggest selling album in history comes from Jackson, who was born in 1958, one of the boom’s peak years. “Thriller” holds up three decades later, a pop soul masterpiece that continues to influence. The videos count, too, and the unmatched clips for “Thriller” put Jackson at the top of that list.

Baby Boomer Music Nirvana

Nirvana, “Nevermind,” 1991. As was the case with Dylan, etc., before the boom, the members of Nirvana are from Generation X (by a year or three). But the record that broke punk, created grunge and forever changed the music world is iconic for the oft-overlooked end of the baby boom.

10 essential baby boomer albums

The following are 10 albums -- listed in chronological order -- that helped define the baby boomer generation, according to Journal Star music critic L. Kent Wolgamott.
