George Norris, 1861-1944: Norris served in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. He was pivotal in creation of the unicameral Legislature in Nebraska. He also backed the Tennessee Valley Authority, rural electrification and the 20th Amendment.

Edward Creighton

Edward Creighton, 1820-1874: Creighton pioneered construction of the telegraph lines and organized the first national bank in the Nebraska territory. Along with his brother John, he co-founded Creighton University in Omaha.

Gilbert Hitchcock

Gilbert Hitchcock, 1859-1934: The son of a U.S. senator, Hitchcock established the Omaha Evening World in 1885 and four years later purchased the Omaha Morning Herald to create the Omaha World-Herald. He served as a Democratic congressman and two-term U.S. senator.

Dwight Griswold

Dwight Griswold, 1893-1954: The banker and newspaper publisher served three terms as governor, was a 1944 GOP vice-presidential nomination contender, a director of the U.S. Military Government in Germany and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1952.

Nathan Gold

Nathan Gold, 1894-1970: Gold moved to Lincoln with his parents in 1902, joined his father William in the family business, the Gold and Company Department Store, and began serving as the store's president in 1936, overseeing it through years of expansion.

Red Cloud

Red Cloud, 1822-1909: Red Cloud was a statesman and war leader of the Oglala Sioux who opposed westward expansion and in 1868 forced the government to abandon the Bozeman Trail in Wyoming. Red Cloud later sought to ease his people's painful transition to reservation life.

Alvin Saunders Johnson, 1874-1971: Johnson was an internationally recognized economist, educator, humanitarian, author and social activist. He served as editor of The New Republic and founded the New School for Social Research in New York City.

Charles Edwin Bessey, 1845-1915: Bessey was a University of Nebraska professor of botany and horticulture who authored federal legislation to establish agricultural experimentation stations at land-grant universities. Bessey's experiments led to President Theodore Roosevelt establishing the manmade Nebraska National Forest in 1902.

J. Sterling Morton, 1832-1902: Morton was a U.S. secretary of agriculture, editor, farmer, legislator and Nebraska territorial secretary. He is the father of Arbor Day.

Loren Eiseley, 1907-1977: Eiseley was an anthropologist, poet and philosopher of science.

Hartley Burr Alexander

Hartley Burr Alexander, 1873-1939: Alexander was an authority on North American Indian mythology, a poet, anthropologist, philosopher and educator. He is the author of the symbolism and inscriptions on the State Capitol and other buildings.

Roscoe Pound

Roscoe Pound, 1870-1964: Pound was dean of the College of Law at the University of Nebraska and Harvard. He also was a botanist and pioneer ecologist.

Arthur Weimar Thompson

Arthur Weimar Thompson, 1886-1970: Thompson was a world-renowned auctioneer who called more than 7,500 livestock sales across North America.
