Broadband legislation

Three bills concerning rural broadband service will go before the Legislature's Transportation and Telecommunications Committee at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Warner Chamber.

* Sen. Tom Brandt of Plymouth's bill (LB549) would require the state to create and maintain a mapping system detailing where high-speed internet is available "address by address," a first step in addressing what he called an economic development issue in rural Nebraska.

* Wireless companies would be relieved of some regulatory burdens under a bill (LB184) by Sen. Curt Friesen of Henderson, spurring development of faster wireless speeds in Nebraska.

* Sen. Lynne Walz of Fremont once again sponsored a bill (LB208) encouraging the creation of public-private partnerships to develop fiber-optic infrastructure to rural areas of the state.
