If You Go

* Several airlines fly into Del Bajio International Airport in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico. San Miguel de Allende is about an hour and a half drive from the airport. For the nine of us, we used the van services of Leandro Tours and Transportation (Leandrotours@hotmail.com) to shuttle to and from the airport and to travel to sites outside of San Miguel. There are quite a few transportation services available for use.

* If you stay in central San Miguel, having an automobile is not a practical option. You can either walk to restaurants and tourist destinations, or take one of the omnipresent green and white cabs that cruise the city. If you walk, wear shoes that are comfortable and safe on the many cobblestone streets. Sidewalks, where there are any, are very narrow.

* One of our travelers arranged our housing (very comfortable, modern and well-located) through san-Miguel-house-rentals.com. The water at the houses we were staying was safe to drink from the tap, as was the water and ice in the restaurants we visited. We did not eat any food from the many street vendors, but got fresh fruit and other supplies from a large market near our houses.

* We used credit cards for meals and other purchases, but it is good to have pesos for cabs and random purchases. There were ATMs available at the airport and at banks in San Miguel.
