Before the walk around Haymarket Park, Vicki Depenbusch, Mary Cox, Jacob Depenbusch, John Depenbusch and Gov. Dave Heineman, talked about autism awareness. Last year at a Nebraska School Counselor Assocation, Vicki Depenbusch heard Heineman say he would come to a parent-teacher conference if he were invited. She contacted him about coming to her son's conference to see what a parent-teacher conference looked like for students with special needs. He attended the conference, and since then Jacob and Heineman have participated in multiple events together. "Every time the governor comes, he learns more about autism, and my son gets bragging rights since he is friends with the governor," his mom said. (BRENNA MALMBERG/For the Lincoln Journal Star)

Walk Now for Autism Speaks brought out nearly 2,000 people to support autism awareness. Held Oct. 9 at Haymarket Park, this was the fifth year the walk has taken place in Lincoln. Participants were greeted by nearly 30 resource fair vendors and entertainers along with various mascots and clowns. They also enjoyed concessions courtesy of Farmland and Cargill. Gov. Dave Heineman and other dignitaries addressed the crowd. According to an Oct. 13 post on the Walk Now for Autism blog, the event had raised nearly $50,000 with donations continuing to come in.
