Wildlife endocrinologist Kari Morfeld's study of elephant health and obesity involves comparing the butts of elephants found in captivity to those of elephants in the wilds of South Africa.

• Sheila Story

Wildlife endocrinologist Kari Morfeld stands in front of a freezer that holds more than 3,000 blood specimens from 290 elephants living in 74 U.S. zoos. She is researching why elephants in captivity are so overweight and the health problems that come with that obesity. Her lab, the Wildlife Conservation Research Center at the Lincoln Children's Zoo, is the first of its kind in the world.

• FRANCIS GARDLER/Lincoln Journal Star

Milla, the Lincoln Children's Zoo's Matschie's tree kangaroo, munches on its morning meal as a joey pops its head out of the mother's pouch in this 2011 photo. Milla's newest joey is just starting to poke his head out and to date has not been seen in public.

Twin red panda cubs are being hand raised at the Lincoln Children's Zoo.

• KRISTIN STREFF/Lincoln Journal Star

Lincoln Children’s Zoo Director John Chapo joins Larry the Cable Guy for a Zoofari filming session at the Humboldt penguin exhibit last year.

• Dennis Buckley

Over the past two years, 26 Lincoln-area high school students have participated in summer expeditions to Costa Rica to work with endangered sea turtles. The 2015 adventure camp will take teens to the coral reefs and ancient ruins of Belize.
