The Gingerichs said when they met Dykema about five months before their due date they agreed she was exactly the person they wanted to help deliver their baby. “She was bubbly and positive. She seemed so smart and educated,” Erika said.

In the early stages of her labor, Erika Gingerich had opted for no pain medication. As her contractions intensified she relied on Dykema for comfort and reassurance. “You are being so strong. You are doing a great job. You’ve got this,” Dykema told her. As labor intensified, Erika said Dykema was very reassuring. “She made me feel safe, loved and secure.”

Doulas aren’t allowed to do medical procedures, but they provide emotional support during delivery. “I am there for the dad and the family. Helping mom takes pressure off dad. I become a cheat sheet and a source of reassurance,” Dykema said. Families that use doulas report more enjoyable birth experiences. The mother is also 60 percent less likely to request an epidural and the likelihood of needing a C-section decreases by half.

After 31 hours of labor and three hours of pushing, Erika Gingerich’s doctor and midwife decided to deliver the baby via C-section. Dykema isn’t allowed to go into surgery, but Erika said she felt prepared. At 11:52 a.m. on March 24, Westin Scott Gingerich was born. “In the recovery room, I got to hold him. It was bliss – seeing the result of all this work,” Erika said.

Dykema became a certified doula after the birth of her first child more than 10 years ago and since then has helped deliver 100 babies. “Having a doula made me feel more prepared to be a mom” Erika said. Doula is a Greek word which means “women’s servant.”
