Shown above is Henry Clarke’s bridge over the Platte River near Bridgeport, Nebraska, built to connect the trail to the Black Hills gold fields with the Union Pacific. The amazing bridge had 61 wooden trusses, all shipped in from Iowa and Illinois. Although Clarke built several Platte River bridges, this is the last one completed and easily the most profitable.

Although Henry Clarke was extremely prominent in politics as well as business in Bellevue, Omaha, Lincoln and outstate Nebraska during the 19th century, he is little remembered today, and even scholarly writers often spell his name with and without the final E, sometimes within the same paragraph.
