Editor's note: Former Journal Star reporter Peter Salter wrote the following letter five years ago, nominating editor Dave Bundy for a Lee Enterprises award honoring exceptional spirit, which he won.

The first time Dave Bundy was diagnosed with cancer, in 2004, he told a reporter: I certainly don’t want to overestimate my importance to the paper.
That wasn’t possible, Dave.
Because by then, 13 years into his career at Lee and editor of the Bismarck Tribune, he had already proved his importance to several Lee newspapers, their staffs and thousands of readers.
He had joined the company in 1991, as a copy editor at the Ottumwa Courier and, later, the Decatur Herald & Review. He had all the required skills: He could wield a pica pole, rescue reporters from their mistakes and put papers to bed before deadline. But he also had something — a combination of commitment, talent and attitude — that screamed management material, and opened early doors to leadership positions.

He was assistant news editor in Bismarck, where he met and married another copy editor, Allison Hawes. They bonded over his music collection when she visited Bismarck for her job interview, he wrote in a column last year:
Allison later told me that when she saw my collection of Squeeze albums, she knew I had good taste. That’s lucky, because nothing else about my home or life at that point screamed "good taste."
They moved to Lincoln in 1997, where he had been named news editor. Dave had a calming and galvanizing effect on the recently merged copy desk, which was still learning how to work together.
He led a year-long redesign, stewing over typeface sizes, subhed styles and puzzle pages. He authored the classic, “Better Living Through Breakout Boxes.” And he spent more time on the paginator than in his office, single-handedly laying out the progress edition.
His willingness to do the work won the respect and admiration of his staff, and anyone who can make copy editors happy deserves an award.
When he left four years later, his staff openly wept — and gave him a Cornhusker toilet seat for the private office bathroom at his new gig, as editor of the Bismarck Tribune.
Dave Bundy, who spent 13 years as the Journal Star's editor, died Sunday. He was 57.

Until then, Dave had spent a decade behind the scenes, shaping how Lee customers read their news, and what their newspapers looked like.
Since then, as editor in Bismarck — and then editor and publisher at the Suburban Journals, and editor of the Journal Star since 2012 — he’s helped guide what they read, responsible for all of the details that go into putting out a newspaper every morning and filling a website every day.
He’s led newsrooms through growth, change and contraction. He’s remained a calming presence, the door to his office always open, stepping up when he has to, stepping aside to let his staff flourish, filling the breakroom freezer with ice cream.

And he’s still willing to do the work. He’s not paginating progress editions anymore, but when he’s not doing big-picture editor duties — preparing the newsroom budget or testifying before the Legislature — he’s quietly compiling our court records, putting together our op-ed pages, proofing the food page recipes.
Even as editor, though, he remained mostly behind the scenes, not even replacing the stock avatar on his Twitter account.
That changed after the second time Dave Bundy was diagnosed with cancer, in 2016. With his trademark humility and candor, he shared his news with readers as he started radiation therapy at Mayo.
I have never had abs of steel. If I had to liken my stomach muscles to something, it would have a consistency somewhere between firm Jell-O and fresh-from-the-can Play-Doh. But I’m proud of my belly. It’s criss-crossed with scars from surviving Stage 4 colon cancer a dozen years ago. The biggest and baddest of them looks like a bite from a good sized shark in bad need of orthodontia.
Right now those scars have company. I’ve got stickers, tattoos, marks and perforations all carefully positioned by doctors and nurses to prepare me for three weeks of radiation therapy.
What started as a little fatigue and a lot of itching in August culminated in a diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma — or bile duct cancer — a pretty rare form of cancer that develops in only 2,000 to 3,000 Americans annually.
He wasn’t seeking pity with his announcement. Rather, he was sharing his glass-half-full optimism, and gratitude. He continued:
My prognosis is uncertain, but I’m pretty sure about one thing. Cancer and trials like it bring out the best in many people. Perhaps it’s a shame it takes a life-threatening illness to unite us, but my family and I have been lifted up by the prayers, warm wishes, strenuous hoping and sincere offers of help from family, friends and strangers as news of my illness has spread.
That was more than three years ago. Today, he’s still in his office, his door still open. The cancer and its treatment might have taken the hair from his head for a few months, but it never robbed him of his grace and humor.
A year after his diagnosis, he wrote:
Now I’m older, wiser, less scared and know that this tumor and I will be — barring a medical breakthrough — sharing my abdomen for the rest of my life, however long it is. So for now, there’s no talk of a battle. My cancer and I have negotiated an uneasy peace, both surviving as long as we behave reasonably. After all, if it kills me, I’ll become a much less hospitable host.
He got the joke when his staff showed up for work wearing red Make Dave’s Bile Duct Great Again hats.

He’s continued to keep us updated on his tests and treatment. And he’s continued to share lessons he’s learned with our readers:
If you’re sick and struggling, look hard for the tiny blessings you can find in life every day, a beautiful sunrise, a really good doughnut, a hug, a good joke, a vivid happy memory.
If you’re the family member or friend of someone who is sick or struggling, try to figure out how to put a smile on his or her face just once a day.
And if you don’t know anyone who’s sick or struggling, well, you’re probably not looking hard enough. Sick people don’t always wear hospital gowns. And sad people don’t always wear frowns. But I’ve heard, too, that it’s OK to do good for people who are already doing well.
This was a roundabout way to follow up my October column. The cancer’s still in there and still about the same size. Hope, happiness and gratitude are all still there, too, but growing nicely.
