Single-handedly -- The man who built, and then rebuilt, a piece of Lincoln's racing history

1 of 9

Jim Schuman

In August, Jim Schuman finally rolled his pandemic project -- his long-lost rebuilt sprint car -- out of his garage and into the sunlight. "That's pretty good," he said. "I'm pretty impressed."

Schuman

After the pandemic started, Jim Schuman spent a year resurrecting the race car he first built in 1981.

In his crowded basement art studio, Jim Schuman works on a reverse painting on glass for a fundraiser for the Nebraska Corvette Association.

Jim Schuman spent 300 hours building this car the first time in the early 1980s. The second time took more than 1,200.

Jim and Klara Schuman have turned their backyard into an old service station.

Jim Schuman talks about his family's racing history -- much of it chronicled on his walls.

The first time Jim Schuman pinstriped this car, in the early 1980s, he used his good right hand. Recently, he had to use his left.

After a stroke in 1989 left his right hand lifeless, Jim Schuman had to learn how to paint and pinstripe with his left.

Jim Schuman holds a reverse-painted glass picture he painted.

The first time Jim Schuman built his No. 77 sprint car, it took him maybe 300 hours. But that was when he had two working hands.

Jim Schuman

In August, Jim Schuman finally rolled his pandemic project -- his long-lost rebuilt sprint car -- out of his garage and into the sunlight. "That's pretty good," he said. "I'm pretty impressed."

After a stroke turned him into a left-hander, Jim Schuman didn't abandon his artwork.

In the early 1980s, Jim Schuman built the first low-budget 360 sprint car, and his friend Ed Bowes drove it.

With one hand and 35 types of wood, Jim Schuman built Lincoln's skyline on the wall behind his hot tub.

Coming Sunday: Longtime Lincoln racer Jim Schuman had just been hired to build the Speedway Motors museum when a stroke stole the use of his right hand. But that didn’t slow him down.

When Jim Schuman was 11, he won the city's quarter midget championship. And that was just the start of his racing career.

The first step of sprint car restoration? Take it down to the frame.
