Office of the Capitol Commission Matt Hansen found a medicine bottle from Lincoln druggist H.W. Brown.

In 1891, the block at 17th and L contained nine spacious houses, and was home to the affluent.

Contractors were moving fast by the second day of the excavation last August, and nobody was on site to guard against the loss of archaeological resources. “I think we lost some things,” said Matt Hansen, Capitol preservation architect.

By 1957, the block had been subdivided, and the number of homes had doubled. Some of the original homes were carved into apartments.

This bird’s-eye view showed what the block looked like in 1899.
