Entomologist Judy Wu-Smart shows a frame from a dead beehive like the dozens she has seen collapse at a research center near Mead since 2017. When she and her research team had the frames tested, they discovered the presence of pesticides and launched an investigation into the source of the contamination.

AltEn is unique among ethanol plants in that it uses seeds pre-treated with pesticides to produce ethanol instead of harvested grain. It ceased operation on Feb. 8 after a state order.

Paula Dyas' dogs (from left), Scout, Buddy and Athena, became violently ill after eating soil conditioner spread in the field behind her home. The conditioner is created with a byproduct produced by AltEn Ethanol's unusual manufacturing process, which uses seeds treated with pesticides instead of harvested grains.

LINCOLN, NEB. - 01/23/2021 - Friends from the village, a group of current and former healthcare workers and volunteers, join together in their open air "fort" during a weekly potluck on Saturday, January 23, 2021. Tauni Waddington and Sheryl Teslow have constructed an open air "fort" in their backyard so the couple could continue to socialize with their close cadre of friends during the pandemic. Built out of PVC pipe, tarp, ropes, and some well placed propane heaters, they are able to stay warm outside. They gather every Saturday starting at 5:30 for a socially-distanced potluck and conversation. Sometimes a movie. they played cards every Saturday for years before the pandemic.
