On a trail near you

You don’t have to drive to Iowa to find a trail to pedal. Lincoln alone has 130 miles of paved trails, good for a 30-minute spin or hours of riding.

If you want to get out of town this fall when cooler days make for perfect riding weather, here are some options for day trips that can be turned into weekend getaways:

Hop on the MoPac Trail at 84th Street and pedal east. A round trip on crushed limestone through Walton, Eagle and Elmwood, ending at Wabash, will give you 44 miles. Stop at Bailey’s Local in Eagle for lunch.

The Homestead Trail starts just south of Saltillo Road. You can drive and park at the trailhead (restrooms and picnic tables), or pedal south from Lincoln on the Jamaica North Trail. A 60-mile round trip will take you past Princeton and Cortland, all the way to Beatrice. Try the Black Crow for lunch and stop at the Roca Tavern for a cold one on the way back.

A 20-minute drive from downtown Lincoln will take you to the Oak Creek trailhead in Valparaiso. Expect a mix of shade and sun on the 26-mile, round-trip ride — and some heavy gravel when the trail crosses country roads as you make your way past Loma to Brainard. Be sure to pedal through town and check out the Catholic church and its shrine to Mary. If you’re lucky, you might see wild turkeys bobbing through the brush on the way back to Valpo.

The Chief Standing Bear Trail, nearly 23 miles of crushed limestone, is worth the drive from Lincoln. Riders can hop on at one of four trailheads — Beatrice, Holmesville, Blue Springs/Wymore or Barneston. The Blue Springs/Wymore trailhead is well-maintained with a shelter, picnic tables, restrooms, a medicine wheel, pollinator garden and tribute to Chief Standing Bear and the Ponca. Riders can find lunch in Beatrice or pedal into Barneston to the Grand Avenue Bar & Grill.

For a longer ride — and a longer drive to get to your ride — try The Cowboy Trail, an abandoned railway line that stretches more than 200 miles from Norfolk to Valentine and points farther west, passing more than a dozen towns along the way.

For more information on these and other area trails visit the Great Plains Trail Network at www.gptn.org.
