An iconic Lincoln landmark for the past two decades will be gone by the weekend.
The colorful boxcars behind Lincoln Station in the Haymarket are being removed in order to open up the area for Canopy Street, the main thoroughfare in the new West Haymarket development.
Scribs Moving and Heavy Hauling of David City worked Thursday and Friday to take the cars to Alter Scrap.
Jim Arter, president of development company The Arter Group and owner of Lincoln Station, said it's sad to see them go, but he is excited for the new possibilities.
The cars drew families with kids who love trains and became a backdrop for countless family, engagement, senior and prom photos during the past 23 years.
Arter joked that if he had charged a dollar for each photo, he'd be able to retire comfortably.
His favorite memories are of the countless kids who got to see the boxcars up close and play with them.
"There's one family whose kid said he'd pretend the cars were moving," he said. "There's not a lot of places left where you can get up and touch a train anymore.
"It's been fun to have them here."
Not everything will be gone -- the steam engine, coal box and caboose will remain near the station, but will be moved south to make way for Q Street expansion.
And the wheels and axles from some of the cars will be turned into benches on the old train platform.
Dan Marvin, arena project coordinator, said both groups are sensitive to how attached people have become to the trains.
"Our goal is to bring as much of that back as we can, but allow pedestrians to get from Canopy Street to Lincoln Station," he said.
Larry Angle of the Lincoln Area Railroad Historical Society said the society inquired about moving a boxcar to their railroad museum near 84th and Adams streets, but the $8,000 moving cost was too high for them to afford.
Friday, crews used jacks to lift the cars off their wheels and towed them onto flatbed trucks to take them four blocks to the scrap yard.
After Arter bought the station in 1989, he needed a barrier between the reception ballroom and the active tracks behind, so he bought six salvaged cars from Burlington Northern and brought in a steam engine from Pioneers Park to Iron Horse Park.
He never imagined it would turn into the attraction it has become.
Angle said the cars told a story if people knew how to read them -- they were each stenciled with a former railroad that the Burlington Northern bought. He said it will be weird for them not to be there.
"Somehow, whenever I was downtown, I'd always find myself down by the station walking by the display," he said. "It was one of my favorite places in Lincoln."
But the cars aren't historically accurate, Arter said, just old steel cars painted colorfully with old Burlington Northern decals: Frisco, Santa Fe and others.
"I bought them by the pound from scrap, and now they're being sold by the pound," he said.
The reason they're being taken out now as opposed to when the development will open is because Alter Scrap, now less than a mile away, is planning to move to 70th Street and Cornhusker Highway.
It was the last chance to move the trains the shorter distance, he said.
Originally, the boxcars were set to be little shops, but they weren't accessible and didn't meet code, so they became storage.
Removal of the cars will allow new exposure to the beautiful back facade of the building, Arter said.
It also will open up opportunities for outdoor dining, he said.
"It'll bring a lot more activity instead of having a cutoff from the rest of the area," he said. "It's a positive change."
