Shireen Ibrahim looks through photographs she keeps in her purse of her past life near Sinjar, Iraq. They include one taken by a Getty photographer of Ibrahim in a wheelchair on the day she was liberated from ISIS enslavement near Kirkuk, Iraq. There are photographs of family, including members missing or still in captivity, as well as the man who sold her into slavery.

Several Yazidi women who escaped the so-called Islamic State said a man who claimed to be a civilian in an interview with Rudaw TV (shown on a screen here) was in fact Abu Ali, an ISIS militant who bought and sold hundreds of Yazidi women and girls beginning in 2014, including Shireen Ibrahim, who now lives in Lincoln.

Shireen Ibrahim, along with her brother, Hadi, and nephew Dilhad were captured by ISIS on Aug. 3, 2014. The adults were soon separated, but Ibrahim was able to convince the militants that Dilhad was her son. He was allowed to stay with her for a little while before Shireen was sold as a slave. Shireen hasn’t seen her brother, but knows her nephew is safe.

Shireen Ibrahim had her cousin, Khairy, tattoo her name on her left forearm so that if she was killed while in ISIS captivity her family would be able to identify her body. The tattoo was made using a needle, and the ink was a combination of milk and ash.

- KAYLA WOLF, Journal Star
Several Yazidi women who escaped the so-called Islamic State said a man who claimed to be a civilian in an interview with Rudaw TV (shown on a screen here) was in fact Abu Ali, an ISIS militant who bought and sold hundreds of Yazidi women and girls beginning in 2014, including Shireen Ibrahim, who now lives in Lincoln.

Twenty-seven members of Shireen Ibrahim’s family, some of whom are pictured here, were captured by Islamic militants on Aug. 3, 2014, near the area of Sinjar, Iraq. Many remain in captivity or missing to this day.

Shireen Ibrahim had her cousin, Khairy, tattoo her name on her left forearm so that if she was killed while in ISIS captivity her family would be able to identify her body. The tattoo was made using a needle, and the ink was a combination of milk and ash.

Shireen Ibrahim holds a photo of herself, which was taken by a Getty photographer on the day she was released from ISIS near Kirkuk, Iraq, in April 2015.

Terri Hensley points to the word "cat" as Shireen Ibrahim sounds out words during an English class at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, where Yazidi women are offered language classes and driving lessons.

Shireen Ibrahim hugs one of the daughters of the family she is staying with at their home in Lincoln.
- KAYLA WOLF, Journal Star
Shireen Ibrahim watches the news on television at the home she is staying at in Lincoln. The poster on the wall in the living room depicts Lalish, a sacred shrine for Yazidis and the place where Ibrahim was reunited with her brother after her captivity.
- KAYLA WOLF, Journal Star
The front porch of the home Shireen Ibrahim is staying at is often adorned with shoes. The Yazidi community in Lincoln is close-knit and cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents often visit each other to help with grocery shopping or give rides when people need them.

Shireen Ibrahim, a Yezidi woman, who was captured by ISIS, poses for a portrait in late October at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. She spent more than eight months being trafficked across Iraq and Syria in ISIS captivity from 2014-15.
