UNL Band Portrait, 3.13

Rose Johnson stands in front of a photo wall that tracks the history of the Cornhusker Marching at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Westbrook Music Building on Thursday. Although she never played in the band, Johnson joined in 1978 as an administrative tech at a time when women were just starting to make an impact on the band.

Diane Miller Frost was the first female drum major for the Cornhusker Marching Band in 1975.

Cornhusker Marching Band members take part in a learning drill in 1945. Women were allowed in the band for three years during World War II but weren't allowed to stay after the war.

In 1944, Martha Nickerson was one of the women who was allowed to play in the Cornhusker Marching Band when men were largely away fighting in World War II.

Joyce Thimgan became the first feature twirler for the Cornhusker Marching Band in 1961.

In 1975, 19 women joined the Cornhusker Marching Band as the first flag corps.

Joyce Thimgan bursts out of Big Bertha at Memorial Stadium in September 1961.

In 1972, women were permanently added to the Cornhusker Marching Band as the military cut their ties to the band. Some of the first women included Nancy Gillpatrick (from left), Lilly Coniglio, Ann Wood, Nancy Wood and Pat Stubbendick.

The University of Nebraska Military Cadet Band in 1895. The Cornhusker Marching Band was originally formed as a cadet band in 1879, just three years after the military department formed at UNL.

The Huskerettes were added to the band in 1960 with 16 pom-pom girls, but the group fizzled out.
