Mary Lou Meier of Lincoln at her cabin in Minnesota with one of the monarch butterflies she has sheltered since it was a caterpillar. She releases them after they hatch — naming them after people she admires — politicians, activists, teachers.

Monarch caterpillars in various growth stages munching on fresh milkweed leaves. 

A monarch hangs on the remains of the chrysalis from which it emerged. Hanging nearby are other chrysalises and a caterpillar that has climbed up to begin making its chrysalis.

This female monarch is named for Temple Grandin, a proponent for the humane treatment of livestock for slaughter and author of more than 60 scientific papers on animal behavior.
