Whittier Elementary School was at the site of the junior high. The original building (far left) was built in 1893 with four rooms, for a cost of $10,084. Additions included those made in 1901 and 1907. The school was closed to make way for Whittier Junior High, Lincoln's first complete junior high school, constructed at that location in 1923. Students from the elementary school were assigned to other schools in the north part of Lincoln, but not without some protest, which included peaceful picketing by some students and parents on Sept. 12, 1922.

The Whittier Junior High polka band provided some toe-tapping music for the Senior Citizens Council on Nov. 11, 1972. Mrs. Gwen Adams, Whittier's instrumental instructor, said the school didn't always have a polka band, but that year they had a good tuba player and that's how polka bands begin. Instrumentalists are (from left) Fred Duckworth, Judy Brown, Bryan Spale, Owen Wilcox, Jerry Gossard and Rick Gossard.
