Retired research geologist Bob Diffendal created a coloring book and guidebook about the creature mosaics on the floor of the Nebraska Capitol Rotunda. The designs make up the border that wraps around the "Earth-Mother" mosaic and four surrounding mosaics, "Water," "Volcanic Fire," "Air" and "Earth."

Making the mosaics
*** Original drawings.** Nebraska paleontologist Erwin Barbour produced at least 51 drawings of fossilized animals and plants and sent them to Capitol artist Hildreth Meière.
*** Mosaic designs.** Meière used 22 of Barbour's color drawings along with other images to produce larger designs of her own using brushes and black ink on brown shop paper.
*** Tile work.** Workmen with De Paoli Company of New York City chipped black marble tile pieces to fit outside Meière's lines and glued them to the shop paper face down, then did the same with light-colored marble pieces inside the images.
*** Placement in Capitol.** The completed pieces were shipped to Lincoln by rail, then placed upside-down and backwards into the Capitol floor, with the shop paper on the top. The paper was then stripped off.
