An Omaha woman found guilty of manslaughter and use of a firearm to commit a felony in a shooting death outside a Florence neighborhood bar was sentenced Monday to 45 to 65 years in prison.
Kanesha Plater, 27, pleaded no contest to killing 20-year-old Vincent Burns of Omaha outside the Jet Sports Bar. A Douglas District Court judge sentenced Plater to 18 to 20 years for manslaughter and 27 to 45 years for use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, with the sentences to be served one after the other.
The Douglas County Attorney's Office amended a charge of second-degree murder to manslaughter in a plea agreement. Under state sentencing guidelines, Plater must serve 22½ years before becoming eligible for parole.
According to the plea agreement, Plater admitted to opening fire outside the bar shortly before midnight on Jan. 23, 2022. Burns was killed by the gunfire, and two other people suffered minor injuries.
