Dave Bundy often spoke about his cancer journey with both humor and humility.
Dave Bundy, who spent 13 years as the Journal Star's editor, died Sunday. He was 57.

In a 2016 column to readers announcing his second cancer diagnosis, he joked about his abdomen being "criss-crossed with scars."
"The biggest and baddest of them looks like a bite from a good-sized shark in bad need of orthodontia," he wrote.
In the same column, he noted his encouragement at the outpouring of support he had received, despite it being just a month before one of the most contentious presidential elections in recent history.
"People are capable of great good. A smile, a kind word, a simple gesture can make a huge difference," Bundy wrote.

Bundy, who spent 13 years as the Journal Star's editor, died Sunday. He was 57.
"The entire Journal Star and Lee Enterprises family mourns the loss of Dave," said Ava Thomas, president of the Journal Star. "He led the newsroom with unwavering transparency, integrity and compassion. His dedication to quality journalism was as profound as his commitment to every person he encountered."
Bundy had battled a rare cancer of the bile duct, called cholangiocarcinoma, with grit and grace. The cancer has a five-year survival rate of less than 20%, but he survived more than eight years.
Thomas said that when he was diagnosed with the cancer in 2016, Bundy joked about credit cards expiring after he did.
"He said the doctors said the odds of survival were slim—just a 2% chance. '2% means I got a shot. I like my odds,'" he told her.
"These moments of levity, even in the darkest times, reflected the man Dave was," Thomas said.
It wasn't the first time he had fought a serious battle with cancer.
In 2004, when he was editor of the Bismarck Tribune in North Dakota, Bundy was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer at the same time his wife was pregnant with twins.
Despite what appeared to be a dire diagnosis at the time, he won that battle and got to see those twins, as well as his other two children, who were 6 and 3 at the time, grow up.
In a column last April recounting the 20-year anniversary of his first cancer diagnosis, Bundy recalled beating the odds and surviving much longer than expected after his second diagnosis as "playing with house money."
"News like that is always stressful, but it felt like I'd been playing with house money since 2004. How upset could I be with any outcome? I dug in for the fight with a smile on my face."

Bundy's time as editor of the Journal Star marked his second stint at the newspaper. From 1997-2001, he was the news editor, overseeing editing and design of the newspaper.
Former Journal Star Editor David Stoeffler, who hired Bundy to be news editor in 1997, said their relationship actually began when he did not hire Bundy for a job at the newspaper in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where he was editor at the time.
But later, a breakfast in Billings, Montana, organized by the company they both worked for, Lee Enterprises, "became a turning point in both of our lives."
"Shortly after that breakfast in 1997, I was named editor of the Journal Star and we had an opening for a news editor. I brought Dave in as a candidate, and as I recall, the copy desk editors were not terribly impressed that the No. 2 news editor at a much smaller paper was someone I would even consider for the job at what was then Lee's second-largest paper," said Stoeffler, who now runs a nonprofit news organization called the Springfield Daily Citizen in Springfield, Missouri.

"But it didn't take long for them to realize what a godsend Dave was as a leader of the desk. In the history of newspaper copy desks, it honestly was the first time I recall having a group of editors that were happy."
Before returning to the Journal Star, Bundy served as editor of the Bismarck Tribune from 2001-2007 and was editorial director and publisher for the Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis, a chain of weekly community newspapers — another job for which Stoeffler hired him.
He also spent time as a reporter or copy editor in Ashland, Ohio; Ottumwa, Iowa; and Decatur, Illinois.
Most of his time as a journalist was spent with Lee Enterprises, the parent company of the Journal Star. In 2019, he won the Lee President's Award for Exceptional Spirit.
In a news release announcing the award, Lee said Bundy won the award "for his remarkable courage and uplifting positive attitude while battling not one, but two, cancer diagnoses. Through it all, Dave has maintained his sense of humor and a steadfast commitment to leading the newsroom in Lincoln."
Marc Chase, senior director of local news for Lee Enterprises, said Bundy was "an incredible editor, journalist and news leader."
"He was an even better father, husband and human being. He loved his readers, his newsroom team and most importantly his family," Chase said. "We will miss him dearly."
Then-News Editor Dave Bundy shows Journal Star open house guests how the front page of the newspaper is designed in October 2000 at the newspaper offices at 926 P St. He oversaw the move of the newsroom from its longtime offices to its new location in the Telegraph District in 2022.
Journal Star file photo
In his first column for the Journal Star after becoming editor, Bundy joked that, "For all I know, in 10 years we'll be beaming headlines onto the insides of your eyelids. How you get your local news won't matter as much as whether you're getting it."
His prediction didn't exactly come true, but he did oversee an ever-evolving transformation of how the news is delivered.
The same year Bundy was hired as editor, the Journal Star started charging people to read news on its website.
He helped keep the newsroom running flawlessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and oversaw the move of the newsroom from its longtime offices at 926 P St. to its new modern digs at 200 S. 21st St. in 2022.
While many people knew Bundy as the face of the Journal Star, others knew him through his church.
Victory Haines, a former Husker football player and principal at Pound Middle School, said he and Bundy were both members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and met in 2012.
Haines said one thing that struck him about Bundy and his wife, Allison, was how much they cared not only for their own children but other children who were members of the congregation.
"There were families that he'd kind of be a surrogate dad for," said Haines, who called Bundy "a dad to many."
He said Bundy was known for his humor and often had a joke or a humorous story to offer, something that didn't stop when he was diagnosed with cancer the second time.
Haines recalled a youth camp they both attended where everybody was getting swarmed by bugs — except Bundy, who joked that it was one of the benefits of chemo.
He said Bundy never complained about having cancer and always had a positive outlook.
In addition to his wife, Bundy is survived by his four children, Dalton, Genevieve, Jacob and Sam, his mother and a sister.
Funeral services are pending.
