Early results discussed at open house
Community organizers from Civic Nebraska, Nebraska Appleseed and the South of Downtown Community Development Organization spent a couple months late last year knocking on doors in six of Lincoln’s lowest-income neighborhoods: Belmont, Clinton, Everett, Hartley, Near South and University Place.
Collective Impact Lincoln — a coalition of the nonprofits — has compiled early results, and will discuss them at an open house from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday at the Malone Community Center, 2032 U St.
Some of the highlights:
NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERNS
*** Public services.** Residents said public utilities aren’t responsive, and bus service is unreliable and not accommodating to their schedules.
*** Safety.** Residents requested better lighting, and they said some streets are too busy to cross comfortably, and that vehicles speed and disobey traffic laws.
*** Other.** Residents identified other problems, such as trash in neighborhoods, a lack of green space and not enough neighborhood identity and pride.
*** Housing.** Some residents reported tension between established neighbors and renters, associated rental units with crime, and said not all renters maintain their properties.
NEIGHBORHOOD POSITIVES
*** Quality of life.** Residents value the diversity of cultures and backgrounds in their neighborhoods, and said they want to be better connected to each other.
*** Other.** Residents like proximity to shops and community centers.
*** Public services.** Residents like bike lanes and zoning that makes neighborhoods safer.
*** Safety.** Residents appreciate the quiet of their neighborhoods.
NEXT EVENT: Community builder workshop, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 14, Dawes Middle School. The public is invited.
