LINCOLN PUBLIC SCHOOLS BOND ISSUE

How do you shrink a high school? Challenges of smaller schools include design, enrollment boundaries

Southwest High School

Southwest High School (above), 7001 S. 14th St., opened in 2002, one of two high schools built with a $100 million bond issue voters approved in 1999. A year later, Lincoln Public Schools opened North Star High School (bottom left) at 5801 N. 33rd St. On Feb. 11, voters will decide whether to approve a $290 million bond issue that would include two new, smaller high schools in southeast and northwest Lincoln. The proposed high schools would be built to accommodate half as many students as Lincoln’s other high schools, but would be designed so they could be expanded to hold 2,000 students.

Margaret Reist

In a few short years, Marissa Ayotte could be looking at a long commute to get her now 10-year-old son from their home near 70th Street and Rokeby Road in southeast Lincoln to a very crowded East High School near 70th and A streets.
