PhotoFiles: Cushman Motor Works' long history in Lincoln

Cushman 1932

In 1932, J.F. and Charles D. Ammon, father and son, moved their 10-year-old Easy Manufacturing Co. from David City to Lincoln after purchasing the Yale and Hopewell Manufacturing Co. at 21st and Y streets. The company made windmills, garden cultivators and hammer feed grinders. In 1934, Easy Manufacturing merged with Cushman Motors Works and Charles Ammon became Cushman's top man. Cushman Motors had been established in 1901 by Everett and Clinton Cushman, who built two-cycle gasoline engines in a basement shop for use of powering pleasure and fishing boats. In 1936, the company began production of the Cushman Scooter, a lightweight motor vehicle that operated at a fraction of a cost of a car. During World War II, Cushman vehicles were used by all branches of the Armed Forces. Cushman workers contributed to the war effort by producing precision items such as bomb fuses and airline engine parts. The firm was purchased by Outboard Marine Corp. in 1957 and the plant was closed by owner Textron in 2002.

By 1959, Cushman Motor Works had become the No. 1 maker of light vehicles in America.
