Waverly to prioritize program expansion, security in $89.9M bond issue

1 of 17

Waverly School Bond, 4.2

Weightlifting students jog around the weight room on Tuesday at Waverly High School. The current weight room is located on top of the locker rooms in a space that was originally designed as a wrestling practice area. “In order for the program to grow, we need more space,” said Anthony Harms, the strength and conditioning coach at Waverly High School.

At any given time, there can be up to 100 students in the Waverly High School band room. Officials say there also are space issues with the middle school band's classroom.

If Waverly voters approve a bond issue, the district would use some of the money to increase space in its industrial technology classroom to allow more students to take welding and wood shop classes.

The drama department's wardrobe closet behind stage requires students to climb up a ladder to reach costumes at Waverly High School.

If a Waverly bond issue passes, all the schools would move their main offices to the front entrances rather than being located in the middle of the schools to increase security. The update would have everyone that enters go through two sets of locked doors and pass by the office to get into the building.

Superintendent Cory Worrell speaks during a news conference about the proposed $89.9 million bond issue to update Waverly school facilities on April 2.

Welding helmets line the shelf of the industrial technology classroom at Waverly High School. Due to a lack of space, there are more students that want to take welding classes than can fit in the current classroom.

Due to a lack of space, the stage serves as the location where the drama department builds sets and also a classroom at Waverly High School.

Waverly voters on May 14 will consider an $89.9 million bond issue, which includes nearly $53 million for improvements and additions at Waverly High School.

WAVERLY — The upcoming $89.9 million Waverly bond issue would not only touch every school in the district, but nearly every educational area offered, too, officials said on Tuesday.

A view of the greenhouse at Waverly High School. The roof is in need of repairs and the space is too narrow to accommodate all of the students in the class.

District 145 Superintendent Cory Worrell speaks during a news conference Tuesday about the proposed $89.9 million bond issue to update school facilities.
