Capitol Christmas ornaments through the years

2004 Capitol ornament

2004 ornament: The front facade of the Capitol was the model for the first official state ornament. The building was completed in 1932 after 10 years of construction and at a cost of $9.8 million. Design elements include Assyrian, Egyptian, Roman, Greek and Gothic influences.

2005 ornament: This is a three-dimensional version of the chandelier hanging in the Rotunda.

2006 Capitol ornament

2006 ornament: "The salvation of the state is watchfulness in the citizen." This showcases the front portal of the building with the inscription by Hartley Burr Alexander, Lee Lawrie's Spirit of the Pioneers relief sculpture, and the grille work on the windows above.

The 2006 Capitol Christmas ornament was inspired by the front portal on the north side of the Capitol and the inscription by Hartley Burr Alexander, "The salvation of the state is watchfulness in the citizen."

2007 Capitol ornament

2007 ornament: Lee Lawrie sculpted life-sized bison in relief on the main north entrance wing walls, and bison heads in relief on the Indiana limestone fireplace surround in the governor's reception room. Smaller bronze bison heads decorate the chandeliers in the Capitol's foyer.

2008 Capitol ornament

2008 ornament: One of the eight winged virtues -- Hope -- found in the dome of the second floor Rotunda is the model for this ornament. The virtues' brightly colored overlapping wings and hands form a celestial rose or star. They remind citizens that virtue is fundamental to a noble life.

2009 Capitol ornament

2009 ornament: This ornament is based on the elaborate floor grille design in the Great Hall on the second floor. These bronze grilles are part of the tondi which surround the three figurative marble mosaics representing the earth, vegetation and animal life. The central element is a mosaic cross and eight-pointed star.

2010 Capitol ornament

2010 ornament: The decorative detail in the west chamber reflected the new Art Deco movement. The decoration in the arch above the speaker's niche in the west legislative chamber features a ribbon of stylized prairie flowers, based on the eight-pointed star used as a basis for other decorative elements in the Capitol.

2011 Capitol ornament

2011 ornament: The ornament features the bronze chandelier in the law library reading room, with its eight-pointed star with bi-level bulbs. Within the star's points, corn, wheat, oak leaves and acorns make up the detail.

2012 Capitol ornament

2012 ornament: In the upper arch of the Capitol's main entrance portal, sculptor Lee Lawrie alternates wheat and corn inside hexagonal rosettes. The ornament copies the corn rosette in the arch.

2013 Capitol ornament

2013 ornament: Artist Hildreth Meiere captured the beauty of the Ponderosa pines found in the rocky escarpments of the Panhandle and the canyons along the Niobrara River, reminders of the state's geographic link to the Rocky Mountains. This ornament design can be found on an interior arch in the Great Hall.

2014 ornament: In the 2012-14 tower elevator upgrade, replicas of the original cast bronze floor dials were installed. This ornament is a replica of the pointer which indicates the floor level on the outer elevator dial.

2015 Capitol ornament

2015 ornament: The Capitol was heated with steam and without mechanical air conditioning, but rather with natural ventilation for summer based on ancient Roman and Persian courtyards which brought cooler air into a building as warm air rose out the top. The ornament was based on a grille that covers one of the exterior vents, including mostly a corn motif.

2016 Capitol ornament

2016 ornament -- This ornament is drawn from the five-inch thick mahogany east legislative chamber doors which represent Native agricultural heritage. Plains tribes believed the legendary supernatural thunderbird at the top of the corn crop design in the doors brings thunder and lightning.
