On Dec. 2, 1955, the Harris overpass was opened for commuter traffic. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Ninth and O streets.

In 1955, the Harris overpass received a much-needed facelift that changed the face of Lincoln commuting. Since then Lincoln roads have transformed into what we all know today.

Cornhusker Highway

In 1978, construction began to upgrade West Cornhusker Highway between Interstate 80 and I-180 to improve access to the Lincoln Municipal Airport.

In August 1959, 12 miles of Interstate 80 were under construction near Lincoln. "Dirt now, but paved soon. That's the status of Nebraska's interstate highway. This segment is located a few miles outside the city."

Interstate 80 dedication

Aug. 12, 1961, marked the dedication of the 52-mile stretch of interstate highway linking Nebraska's two largest cities, Lincoln and Omaha. As some 300 people cheered at the Greenwood interchange, Gov. Frank Morrison snipped a red ribbon crossing the double highway. The ribbon was stretched across both east- and westbound lanes, with the dignitaries seated on the flatbed truck drawn up in the median.

Interstate 180 to downtown Lincoln

In 1963, construction continues on the twin viaducts of Interstate 180 that lead into downtown Lincoln. Although they aren’t quite the same, each viaduct changed the way people travel in and out of downtown.

10th Street Viaduct

Work continues on the north end of the new 10th street viaduct near Memorial Stadium. Also in the photo is the pedestrian bridge used by fans to reach the stadium on gameday.

27th Street expansion project

Construction continues on the 27th Street expansion project that linked Interstate 80 and 27th Street. The expansion project added an alternative route for people to come into the city of Lincoln.
