City of Lincoln looks 30 years into future, sees growth east, south and building in existing neighborhoods

Skyline, 09.09

City officials will release a draft Monday of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan, which City Planning Director David Cary calls a vision for the future. “It’s what we want to do and don’t want to do, our long-term vision of what we want our community to be.”

Skyline, 09.10

The proposed Comprehensive Plan calls for 25% of the new growth to be inside existing neighborhoods and corridors of the city, like the new apartments being built near 48th and Leighton Avenue.

New houses being constructed near 98th and Van Dorn streets are signs of Lincoln's continuing expansion, much of which is expected to occur over the next 30 years mostly to the east and south.

By 2050, Lincoln will have roughly 48,000 new households, nearly a third of its residents will be minorities, more of them will be older than 65 and the city’s limits will push farther east and south.

Portrait of graffiti artist Micah Mullins, who was commissioned to create a new mural in a little-known tunnel beneath the train tracks at Third and F streets. The project is part of the upcoming Streets Alive festival, sponsored by Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln. The mural depicts the neighborhood’s identity – a train, Quinn Chapel, the Mexican flag, the Volga German crest, an outline of the African continent, among others. FRANCIS GARDLER, Journal Star

City officials will release a draft Monday of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan, which City Planning Director David Cary calls a vision for the future. “It’s what we want to do and don’t want to do, our long-term vision of what we want our community to be.”

The proposed Comprehensive Plan calls for 25% of the new growth to be inside existing neighborhoods and corridors of the city, like the new apartments being built near 48th and Leighton Avenue.
