Wounded Knee

Mary Barry-Magsamen, executive director of St. Monica’s Behavioral Health Services for Women, sits near Wounded Knee, S.D., during a trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in July to learn about how alcohol sales in Whiteclay, Neb., affect the area.

Winnebago activist Frank LaMere (from left), state Sen. Sue Crawford of Bellevue, filmmaker John Maisch and legislative aide Kaitlin Reece talk at a coffee shop in Pine Ridge, S.D., in 2015.

In May 2005, family and friends gather at a memorial for Sara Rose Boltz, who died in a car wreck near a popular teen drinking spot about 2 miles southeast of Whiteclay. The crash coincided with the reservation's annual powwow, when drinking and drug use peak.

Ben Janis (left) sits with a beer on the streets of Whiteclay in June 2003, just before a protest march from nearby Pine Ridge Reservation.

A Native demonstration to protest the sale of alcohol and unsolved murders in Whiteclay takes place on July 3, 1999.
