What's affordable?
In Nebraska the fair market rent (FMR) for a two-bedroom apartment is $815 and for a one-bedroom house is $639. The FMR, which is a federal designation, is based on lower-than-average rent in the area, plus utilities. In order to afford this level of rent and utilities, without paying more than 30 percent of income on housing, a household must earn $2,715 a month or $32,850 annually. In Nebraska, someone with a full-time job paying minimum wage can only afford $468 in rent. A renter making the state’s average income could afford $1,844 per month for housing.
