The first state Capitol was built in 1867. It was ready for use by Dec. 1, 1868, but was so poorly constructed that it had to be razed in 1887. The occupants of the home at 1517 H St., which was built in 1884, would have watched this Capitol torn down and the second Capitol built in its spot.

Today, we're exploring a letter that was mailed to a woman living across the street from the Capitol during the construction of the second and third state Capitols in Lincoln. The letter showed up mysteriously among the mail of postal carrier Larry Schultz in mid-June -- mailed from Des Moines, Iowa, 103 years ago.
