Welcome to Pride of the Heartland

Pride of the Heartland is all about people helping people. While happenings like tornadoes, local crimes, budget cuts, fires, international war and terrorism are important to know about, it’s nice to read about good things people are doing to help others – right here in our own community.

That, in a nutshell, is what our sixth annual Pride of the Heartland publication is about. The people you will read about are from all walks of life – from a woman who helps empower young women after leaving her own abusive relationship, to a pastor who offers Encouragement Unlimited to give at-risk families hope, to local women business owners who sponsor Pocket Change for Charity events to help local nonprofit agencies – one quarter at a time.

Amy Hunter

Some people live to help others, and Amy Hunter is one of those rare souls. A caretaker by nature, Amy works as a home health aide by day and mother and grandmother when she’s not at work. Her reputation for kindheartedness extends to everyone she knows.

John Leonard Harris

"All that you and I have to concern ourselves with is today," John Leonard Harris is saying into the camera. His eyes are afire. "Some people spend most of their time wringing their hands about things they did in the past or things they have yet to do in the future. What you really can do is what you can do today."

Harris is president of Encouragement Unlimited, a Lincoln-based nonprofit corporation serving the Lincoln community, and he is speaking into his cell phone camera for a segment called "Encouragement Word of the Day," which he posts on YouTube. The video series is one of the many hodgepodge activities of this do-everything community-focused organizer.
