The Lincoln Police Department provided the following tips -- originally from the FBI -- on how to avoid being a victim:

* Only deal with local landlords or renters.

* Be suspicious if asked to only use a wire transfer service.

* Beware of e-mail from landlord written in poor or broken English.

* Be wary if price or rent is far less than comparable homes in the area.

* Don’t give out personal information, like Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers.

* Report potential scams to law enforcement or the attorney general’s office.
