Little Simon living in the land of sunshine
In July, a crowd gathered at Antelope Park to celebrate a little boy with blond curls.
They donated money to help Simon and his parents move to San Diego, where cold wouldn’t trigger his seizures, and where he could get treatment not available here.

Giving circle chooses 3 nonprofits to benefit
A new fundraising effort that allows county residents to pool donations for a bigger impact has decided where to put its first $10,000.
Earlier this year, the Lincoln Community Foundation started NextGen Lincoln for Lancaster County residents 40 and younger. The group's 35 members call the fundraising tool a giving circle.

Student-oriented housing project on track
The bones of the Latitude Lincoln apartment complex are nearly complete, and the building is on schedule for an Aug. 18 move-in.
The wood framing is done and contractors are installing windows and doing brickwork on the six-story building on the block bounded by 10th, 11th M and N streets, said general manager Dave Brown.

Acquitted murder suspect faces new knife allegation
A man acquitted earlier this year in the stabbing death of a man he'd been drinking with in Lincoln now faces new charges in Omaha for allegedly coming at a man with a steak knife.
Ivan Fourhorns, 48, faces three felonies -- terroristic threats, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person -- for an incident Sept. 17.

Inmate's legal attempt to visit, write wife fails
The inmate who sued the state, saying a prison policy intruded on his marriage, remains behind bars and unable to write or visit his wife. But that may soon change.
A Lancaster County District Court judge dismissed Scott Bonham's lawsuit over a Community Corrections Center-Lincoln policy barring him from contacting his wife, who also was an inmate there.

Lincoln trumps all in impermanent marks
At the start of the year, the staff at Revitalift, one of the few area places to offer laser tattoo removal, introduced us to people who’d decided it was time to move on from markings of Mickey Mouse and Snoopy, of husbands' names and wives' faces, of toe flowers and tramp stamps.
The response to the story was even more interest, co-owner Heather Swenson said soon after it ran.

Yazidi boy slowly adjusting to life in the U.S.
Adam Ali has begun to adjust to life in Lincoln after a harrowing escape from the Islamic State in Iraq earlier this year.
His parents, Khaleel Ali and Hayfaa Beirali, were forced to leave their newborn when they fled Iraq in 2010, fearing the trip could kill the prematurely born baby.

Lincoln man plans to attempt Everest again
The avalanche that killed a dozen Sherpa climbing guides in April also ended Robert Kay’s third attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
His second attempt in 2013 ended when he risked losing his fingers and toes to frostbite. And during his first climb, in 2010, he was turned back by lightning and extreme cold.

Thousands calling the resurrected Time & Temp number
Reminding us all what news and information is most important right this minute, the restoration of the Time and Temperature telephone number appears to have satisfied faithful local dialers.
Bruce Robertson of RTI Media, a North Carolina company that picked up the 402-476-9211 number after Windstream dropped it in September, said call counts for the first month after Time & Temp returned to service in October were just over 52,000.

Nebraskans file 20 lawsuits against seed company
Nebraska corn producers have now filed more than 20 lawsuits against seed and agrochemical giant Syngenta.
They are just a portion of the lawsuits filed against the Swiss agribusiness claiming damages because Chinese imports of corn have dropped precipitously after inspectors there found traces of genetically modified corn sold by Syngenta, MIR 162, known as Agrisure Viptera. The communist country has banned that corn.

A national group created as a Christian-based alternative to the Boy Scouts hasn’t expanded throughout Nebraska the way organizers hoped it would.
The Boy Scouts of America’s decision in May 2013 to allow openly gay boys to join sparked the movement to establish Trail Life USA, which considers homosexuality sinful.

Nebraska Nice getting noticed
The much-debated theme of the Nebraska Tourism Commission's campaign to draw visitors from elsewhere -- Visit Nebraska. Visit Nice. -- appears to have traction.
The commission has reprinted its travel guide to meet demand, it said, and it has been out of them since the end of October.

City arena suite leased 16 times
Since Mayor Chris Beutler turned over leasing the city’s suite at Pinnacle Bank Arena to Leadership Lincoln in June, private citizens have rented the room 16 times -- for big entertainers and basketball, including five upcoming games.
The mayor's office used it once, joining the Lancaster County Board for the UNL vs. UNO game. His office has also reserved it for three men's games next year to entertain state senators.

Bob Seger likes long walks, heavy petting and relaxing in bed. And he wants to go home with you.
The shy, older Maltese dog with no teeth was one of 21 dogs rescued by Hearts United for Animals, an Auburn animal shelter, from a Malcolm-area puppy mill.

Tiny town still saving for fire hall, gym and future
The men showed up late on a September day, eight of them, with their farm tractors, dump trucks and dozer.
They worked until dark and most of the next day. They scraped, filled and leveled a piece of land on the edge of Newport. They helped lay a foundation, a future, for their town.

Speech contest winner gained confidence from NSAA flap
Michael Barth learned a lot last April: That he can be himself, and Nebraskans are willing to accept -- and support -- him.
The Nebraska School Activities Association created a firestorm when it asked the Gordon-Rushville senior not to perform his state-championship poems on NET Television's “Best of the Best” show.
