Letter: Don't yield local control of schools

Nebraskans have long been proud of their public school systems. I believe in locally controlled public schools. This has worked for a very long time.

In 2023 the Legislature passed LB753. The Opportunity Scholarships Act established scholarships for eligible students to attend qualified, privately operated elementary and secondary schools.

Letter: Two parties, two bad choices

We always tell children to make good choices while we are faced with making a decision for president that presents none.

Should we elect a convicted felon who condoned a raid on the U.S. Capitol or someone who cannot think and speak under pressure in the highest pressure job in the world?

Letter: Ushering in a new era in GOP

In light of the cognitive, moral and political decline of the Republican Party, the time has come to update Emma Lazarus’s famous poem, “New Colossus.” How about replace Lady Liberty and immigrants with Liz Cheney and the GOP?

“With silent lips. Give me your insurrectionists, your conspiracy theorists, your huddled election deniers and grifters yearning to read Trump Bibles and sleep on My Pillows. The wretched patriots of Fox News and Christian hypocrites. Send these, populism’s tragically naive, willfully ignorant, and Republican opportunists — oh, and Clarence Thomas’ billionaire donors — tempest-tost to me, I lift the Constitution, the Rule of Law, and Truth beside the golden door!”

Letter: Tax shift hurts lower-income families

Gov. Jim Pillen is one of the wealthier people in the state.

It is not uncommon for wealthy people to run for public office. Take the presidency. George Washington was one of the wealthiest people in the colonies, and closer to the present, both Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt and George H.W. and George W. Bush came from wealth, as did William Howard Taft, John F. Kennedy and Donald Trump to name a few. But being an elected official is not like running a business, where the sole purpose is to make a profit.

Letter: Nation needs Trump to withdraw

The presidential debate makes it clear that a withdrawal from the race is warranted, and I urge convicted felon Donald Trump to do so as soon as possible.

Trump was a terrible president. We had an out-of-control pandemic, 10 million Americans had lost their jobs, 12 million Americans lost insurance, 8 million Americans fell into poverty and the annual deficit increased from $585 billion to $3.1 trillion. His entire sorry term was capped by a violent insurrection fueled by an avalanche of lies.

Letter: Proud Libertarian even prouder now

I’ve never been so proud to be a Libertarian as I am since watching the presidential debate, which of course Chase Oliver, our candidate, was not invited to — apparently because he didn’t meet the qualifications of being over 80 and either crazy or senile.

Letter: Flag is for all who love America

I have been upset for a long time about the misuse of the American flag. When I was growing up, the flag was treated with great respect. It was raised on a pole in the morning, taken down at dusk and folded with great care and reverence. It was then secured in an appropriate place until the next day.

When the flag passed in a parade many stood at attention and saluted, particularly the veterans. We would never have expected the flag to be made into T-shirt material, used on the streets by people with torches, shouting antisemitic chants or waved during an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Letter: Wrong focus on protecting kids

I read recently that one of the larger providers of adult-oriented videos is shutting down access to Nebraskans as a result of a poorly thought-out legislative attempt to protect our children. Lawmakers should quit meddling in our personal lives. There is a constitutional right to free speech.

Parents have the ability to block their children from accessing websites they believe may be inappropriate for our children. Young citizens are more adept at computer-related issues and can quite easily bypass filters that will identify their age. One very easy method is to use virtual private networks, which can make a user in Nebraska appear to be in another state. Nebraska continues to appear backward to much of the United States with these restrictions plus those on marijuana for medicinal purposes as well as recreational. These instances of meddling most often miss the mark. I imagine this latest law will be challenged in court, resulting in another waste of our hard-earned tax money.

Letter: Confine fireworks to right days

As fireworks fly over the next few days, I wonder how many people know what fireworks are supposed to symbolize. Most don't.

They symbolize the sights and sounds of a battlefield — the boom, the sound of cannon and gunfire. The smoke symbolizes the smoke that would blanket a battlefield from guns and cannons. The fireworks themselves symbolize the fire weapons.

Now that the Supreme Court has ruled that the president is above the law we can save our democracy for a few more years.

Letter: What about government by people?

Since 1991 Nebraska has had a system that allows for splitting our electoral votes. Two of Nebraska’s five votes go to the statewide winner while the remaining three votes are selected by congressional districts.

This system was enacted partly to attract more presidential candidates to Nebraska, but also to give independent voice to each of Nebraska’s three congressional districts.
