Before Robber's Cave reopened to the public, the new owners had to dig 30 feet into the ground to find a filled-in former entrance, rewire the tunnels and hang lights, bring it up to fire code and protect its federally threatened bats.

Robber's Cave tour guide Joel Green has written a book about the longtime landmark, tracing its geology, history and popularity. "I think people would like to know more, just like me."

On Nov. 1, 1912, members of the Union Literary Society held what was described as a "social" meeting at Robber's Cave. The photo was republished in 1974 to mark the organization's centennial.

After the caves opened to the public in April 1986, Vi Scarborough and her son, Scott Maybin, would spotlight some of the features of the tunnels for visitors. The first Journal Star stories about the tours recommended visitors bring a sweater or light jacket to stay warm.
