Letter, 3/6: Complain about snow removal? Then do your own

Letter, 3/6: Complain about snow removal? Then do your own

I am totally ashamed of the residents of Lincoln. What would you do if you had to clean your own streets?

My husband was on snow removal and storm cleanup for many years, and it is totally a thankless job. Mr. Big Shot and Ms. Snobby always want to be first, and that is totally impossible.

Letter, 3/6: Lincoln should allow studded tires

Let's again allow studded tires on cars.

Since the city doesn't clear residential streets unless there's a lot of snow, and since there are limited numbers of crews, studded tires would be of great help in navigating streets covered with ice and snow.

Letter, 3/7: Sales tax hike shifts tax burden

Lincoln voters considering the additional half-cent sales tax proposal at the election this spring need to be aware that a deal was made in order to get the support of developers for this proposed increase to repair streets.

In exchange for their support, developers were promised no increase to impact fees for new developments for the next five years. Further, 25 percent would be reserved for new street construction to promote development.

Letter, 3/7: Fear, selfishness derail abortion bill

The U.S. Senate failed to pass a bill that would have ensured the protection of a baby born alive after a failed abortion attempt.

I have known many women, both young and old who have opted to abort their babies for one reason or another. Most often the reasons boiled down to fear and selfishness. Fear of getting in trouble when a young girl’s parents find out, fear of a husband finding out about the affair, now there would be a baby involved and he would know it was not his. The fear of what ifs.

Letter, 3/6: We sometimes treat US flag as 'rag'

Anyone in an argument with a military service veteran who is permanently bearing the scars and wounds resulting from service under the flag of the United States of America is not doing themselves any great favor by referring to the flag as a "rag."

However, that fact should also not be allowed to distract from an equal fact that the flag of the United States of America has been permanently stained with many sins of the past and present; and, those are sins have done much to treat the flag as a rag. They will not be quickly, if ever, undone.

Letter, 3/5: LPS not giving us what we pay for

The recent round of unpleasant property valuation increases are only a contributing factor and not the root cause of any tax increases. Entities funded by property taxes will ultimately determine how much you end up paying based on how much they spend.

So where does it go, and what do we get?

Letter, 3/3: NU favors wealthy ticket holders

After reading Dwayne Goldsmith's letter to the editor ("Donations price us out of NU tickets," Feb. 20), I can understand his frustration with the university's demand that he donate $750 per season ticket so he can pass on the tickets within his family.

His four tickets would require a so-called donation of $3,000! A nice tidy sum, if one is filthy rich. Mr. Goldsmith's contention that this huge increase in money is highway robbery is very true, but it's way beyond that.

Letter, 3/3: New mayor must hear Lincoln's youth

To the voters of Lincoln: The time is coming to decide what kind of city we wish to be.

As students of Lincoln, we feel it our civic duty to articulate our definition of the ideal mayoral candidate, as we, too, call Lincoln our home. Consider our ideas in this time of decisions.

Letter, 3/3: US flag is sign of freedom, not 'rag'

In a Feb. 22 speech, Sen. Ernie Chambers called the American flag a “rag,” comparing it to a “swastika.”

During World War II, three of my uncles joined the Navy to fight in the Pacific – two on destroyers that survived Japanese kamikazes. A fourth was an Army medic in the Philippines. They each served under that “rag.”

Letter, 3/3: Preserve nonprofit hospitals' tax exemption

North Platte Sen. Mike Groene has introduced LB529, which would remove the property tax exemption for not-for-profit hospitals in Nebraska. This bill would reduce the exemption for each hospital to the percentage of the “gratuitously” provided services of the hospital.

On behalf of our 95 Nebraska hospitals, the more than 44,000 individuals we employ and the 10,000-plus patients cared for each day in our state, we firmly oppose LB 529.

Letter, 3/2: Guns are last thing teachers need

As a current secondary education major, I understand the desire to make sure students in schools are as protected as possible. With the rampant uprising of school shootings, I understand the fear for a student’s safety once they walk through the doors of an educational institution.

A solution being thrown around is the concept of arming teachers. LB343 would allow school personnel to carry a handgun on campus. I personally agree with Sen. Ernie Chambers’s stance on the topic: Arming teachers is "insanity."

Letter, 3/2: City strives for transparency on snow

The city’s Winter Operations Plan plays a crucial role in keeping our citizens safe during inclement weather. While the current plan was recently updated to reflect national best practices, the 4-inch threshold for service on residential streets has been in place for decades.

To determine the threshold, we measure snowfall at 12 locations across the city to obtain the average. More information may be found at snow.lincoln.ne.gov.

Letter, 3/1: Native voices not heard on Keystone XL

Two Native American tribes are taking the Trump administration to court over the recent approval of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The Keystone XL pipeline is a proposed oil pipe that will carry crude oil from Canada and link to an existing pipe in Steele City. The battle over the pipeline has been fought for over a decade, and yet, the Rosebud Sioux and the Belknap tribes believe their voices were overlooked. The pipeline's proposed route cuts right through the sacred land of both tribes in South Dakota and Montana.

The editorial board bought in to the whole man-made climate change theory ("Climate plan makes sense for Nebraska," Feb. 16) without appreciation as to how flawed the theory is or how concerns have been exaggerated.

Local View: Nebraska due for alcohol tax hike

The Lincoln Journal Star published an editorial (“Tax reform mustn’t hit breweries this tough,” Feb. 20) urging lawmakers not to unfairly target alcohol producers to pay for property tax relief.

The editorial offers arguments extolling the economic benefits of Nebraska’s 49 breweries but presents a one-sided argument that ignores the harms that alcohol causes in our state. With more than 20 percent of our population drinking excessively, we need evidence-based policies that only the Legislature can deliver.

Letter, 3/1: Liberal editorials miss the mark

The Lincoln Journal Star needs to get out of the left-wing echo-chambers when making editorials.
