Letter, 9/27: Lesson from Oregon for NU fans

Kudos to Joshua Fellwock from Oregon for his letter that reminds all local Nebraska football fans that "Husker fans must remain classy" (Sept. 24). Recent booing of players at Memorial Stadium is inexcusable, boorish behavior targeted at a bunch of collegiate kids playing their hearts out.

I've heard some try to excuse this inexcusable behavior because fans are "frustrated" or "disappointed." It is doubtful that fans are any more frustrated than the players on the field.

Letter, 9/27: Trump lacks authority on respect

If not for its utter obscenity, Trump’s invective toward athletes supposedly disrespecting the American flag by protesting against racial injustice would be the height of irony.

A locker-room talker with “tremendous respect for women” dares to pontificate about respect!

Letter, 9/27: More safety needed at Moore

This August, Moore Middle School opened its doors to students in southeast Lincoln. It's a beautiful school with amazing amenities. One thing it does not have is a safe route for local children to walk to school.

Every morning and every afternoon, groups of children wait to cross South 84th Street as cars and trucks travel past at 45 mph — and 55 mph 100 feet south of this crossing. Kids on bikes, kids with parents, groups of kids, kids walking alone, all trying to safely traverse this intersection without the aid of a crosswalk, stoplight, or even a flashing yellow school zone designation.

Letter, 9/26: Health care reform must be bipartisan

I have been encouraged by the start of bipartisan work in Congress on potential health care solutions.

Recently, I’ve heard policy experts as well as current and former governors across the country say that existing insurance marketplaces can be strengthened and that the state-federal Medicaid partnership can be improved without a repeal of the health care law as a starting point.

Letter, 9/26: Alaskans worth more than Nebraskans?

As of Monday, Republican leaders are apparently willing to pay states a lot of money if their U.S. senators switches their vote to yes, on the Graham-Cassidy bill.

Amendments seeking Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski's yes vote on this bill would increase her state's Medicaid funding by $1.4 billion, when it was set to decrease by $2 billion. Plus, according to CNBC, leaders have changed Graham-Cassidy to pay 3 other states more for their yes votes.

Letter, 9/25: Riskowski wrong for Legislature

As an equal rights advocate, I am spurred to action. As a voter who happens to be gay, I am beyond concerned. I am talking about a candidate for Legislature, Al Riskowski. He simply does not represent Nebraska values.

Let me explain his record. Back in 2015, when the second ruling for marriage equality took place, he said that it will be "seen as a ruling that’s going to create many more problems for us as a nation than it’s going to solve." I would argue that nuclear war with North Korea creates more problems for us as a nation than two men getting married.

Letter, 9/25: To fair-weather Husker fans

Hello -- the Huskers are a college team, not a pro team. College teams change from year to year.

They are college boys. Seniors go, and freshmen come. That is the nature of a college team. The Huskers need your support even when they lose. Nobody can win all the time -- especially college teams.

Letter, 9/24: Husker fans must stay classy

I've been a Nebraska fan since I was 4. I'm now 33. I love Nebraska. But I can say I'm disappointed in the media and the fans for how they have blasted the players for years through tough years.

Nebraska hasn't always won. It can be a struggle, but fans support the players no matter what. We have been known to be the best fans in football, yet we boo our team? We tell them they suck? We act like fools on social media?

Letter, 9/24: DeVos wrong on campus sex assault

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has sent a loud message to women, especially college-aged women, that there is no support from this administration if they are sexually assaulted or raped on campus.

DeVos seems more interested in undoing the previous administration’s instructions on how schools must investigate and adjudicate accusations of sexual violence than creating a more equitable solution – a trend that has been evident throughout the Trump administration.

Letter, 9/24: Riley can't contend for titles

I have been following our beloved Husker football since 1969. In that time, I have enjoyed watching five national championships and numerous conference titles. Yes, we were once a steady top-10 team, and, during the '70s and '90s, a consistent top-five team.

I will always be a die-hard Husker fan, no matter how the team performs. Obviously, this is the same feeling of every Husker fan: Any fair-weather fans left years ago.

Letter, 9/24: School vouchers are nonsensical

Emily Villa (“A case for evolution in schools,” Sept. 17) must have slept through the biology class at her parochial school.

Although people routinely talk about cultural evolution or schools evolving, the only things that evolve are populations of living organisms. It is nonsense to talk about one school being more fit than another school since fitness refers to reproductive success and schools do not reproduce.

Letter, 9/23: Why mess with Senior Center?

As a senior citizen who frequently eats at the Downtown Senior Center, I am perplexed why the city is considering catering the food in from Omaha.

If there is a good reason to cater food, why is the city not considering catering from Tabitha Home, which feeds an equal number of senior citizens each day? Is any other caterer from Lincoln being considered?

Letter, 9/22: People are not disposable

In a way, I am amazed that our country even has to have a discussion about the fate of the DACA recipients. The "Dreamers" should stay.

They were raised in our country. Should we send them away to a country whose culture they do not know? Do we expect that they will actually flourish in such circumstances? And, if we don't care, what does that say about who have become?

Letter, 9/22: GOP health bill fails Nebraska

While the rest of our nation is responding to two of the most devastating natural disasters in recent memory, Senate Republicans are at it again. They are trying to force through another attempt to reform the health care system without proper debate, discussion or discourse.

This bill is as heinous and destructive as the previous. Not only does it completely strip away federal protections for pre-existing conditions, but it is a ticking timebomb.

Letter, 9/21: We all must fight opioid abuse

There has been considerable attention given to the report of the opioid epidemic affecting our city and state. This week, I saw a one-hour report on the epidemic that gave a phone number to call if you had questions. I am afraid that phone number is a worthless token with a problem this big.

People of any and all ages, economic, social, racial and religious beliefs have been struck down by opioids. It will take months of in-house treatment to help these addicts to overcome the depth of their disease.

Letter. 9/21: Congress shouldn't approve amnesty

Should we allow in more highly educated and technically skilled workers under an expanded H1B visa program as proposed by President Trump and supported by Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom?

As a consequence, that would put our highly educated workers in competition for jobs and driving down wages and salaries. College graduates here already suffer under $1 trillion in debt while many in other countries, like Germany or Saudi Arabia, pay nothing for a college education.

Letter, 9/21: Bannon misleads -- again

Listening to populist Steve Bannon’s spin on "60 Minutes" could mislead one into believing the 2016 presidential election was a landslide popular victory for Donald Trump.

As a matter of fact, the popular results had Trump losing the election by a relatively significant nearly 3-million-vote margin. Victory was only assured in how the Electoral College intercedes in translating the popular vote to decide an election.

If not for its utter obscenity, Trump’s invective toward athletes supposedly disrespecting the American flag by protesting against racial injustice would be the height of irony.
