I've been thinking about catchy music a lot lately. Just kind of wondering what makes something so pleasing to listen to. There are certain songs that just have it, and by "it" I don't necessarily mean that annoying quality that makes a song catchy. My standards of catchy are more along the lines of listeing to a song and realizing that the artist has really struck on something great. It might be a a lyric or a guitar line or hook or whatever else. And do realize that this list is completely subjective and changes for myself from day to day or week to week, etc. I want to know what you think are the best hooks of all time - or at least those that come to your mind right away. They don't have to be your favorite songs - just the ones that are inherently pleasing to your ear. Here are a few of mine: Snoop Dogg: "Nuthin But a G-Thang" - Oh my god. Can it get any better than this? It's four minutes of cheesy synthesizers, awesome beats and female degradation. Think about it - what rap line is better than "It's like this and like that and like this and uh.." so simple, but so so good. My co-worker Jeff didn't agree with me. I had him put on my ipod and listen because he'd never heard it before. No reaction AT ALL. There must be something wrong with him. Billy Joel: "For the Longest Time," - Ok. This one's slightly embarrassing, but I always get really excited when I hear it on the radio (and I think you might too). The barbershop harmonies? Wonderfully stupid love lyrics? Instant classic. Televison: "Marquee Moon"- I dont' think I'll ever get sick of the guitar line in this song. It's like 9 minutes or something, but that's 9 minutes of awesomeness. The Exploding Hearts: "Throwaway Style"- Everything that this band made is catchy. No exceptions. Check them out if you haven't heard them. It's power pop-punk to the max!!! The Beach Boys: "God Only Knows"- How can you not smile when you hear this song? The Beach Boys are masters at making catchy songs -almost to error sometimes - but this one is so sweet. T.Rex: "Bang a Gong" - Probably the chessiest and dirtiest of T.Rex's stuff. But it always makes me want to have a good time, so it will forever be a pre-going out staple. Honorable Mentions (Depending on the day these might be on my top list): Talking Heads: "Burning Down the House" Annie Lennox: "Walking on Broken Glass" The Foundations: "Build Me Up Buttercup Baby" ( makes me smile every time I hear it!) Gift of Gab: "Way of The Light" (Diet Coke commercial anyone?) So so many more, but I'm sick of going through my iTunes. And a category of its own: The Beatles. This is really difficult to choose the catchiest song from each album because catchy is The Beatles' bread and butter, but I'll give it a try. Rubber Soul: This was a tough album to choose from because everything is so good and poppy, but I think it has to be "I'm Looking Through You" Sgt. Pepper's: "Lovely Rita" Revolver: IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE TO CHOOSE JUST ONE??? I got overwhelmed just thinking about which song to choose. But, I might have to go with "She Said She Said." Or maybe "Eleanor Rigby." Or "And Your Bird Can Sing." I give up. I'm done. The task of choosing the catchiest songs of all time was just too big for me. I'm worn out. But feel free to share yours.
