History and hurt on Half Breed Drive

Victoria Hoff was surprised, and then angry, when she saw the sign for Half Breed Drive on the east edge of Auburn. She understands the area's history, she said. "But to have a street sign? It’s like slapping me."

• ERIC GREGORY/Lincoln Journal Star

Half Breed Drive follows a few miles of the former western boundary of Nemaha County's Half-Breed Tract, which disbanded in 1862. Just one farmhouse, an old rental, carries a Half Breed Drive address.

• ERIC GREGORY/Lincoln Journal Star

The Half-Breed Tract, which followed a stretch of the Missouri River and stretched 10 miles inland in Nemaha and Richardson counties, was disbanded in 1862, seven years before this map was made.

A state historical marker explains the origins of the Half-Breed Tract just east of Auburn, on U.S. 136.

AUBURN -- Half Breed Drive stretches out of Auburn for just a few miles, through the wintering cornfields, past a single mailbox.
