The original caption on the Associated Press wire photo sent on Jan. 29, 1958, read: YOUNG NEBRASKA GIRL IN CUSTODY: Caril Fugate, 14, appears in a state of shock as she is interrogated by sheriff’s officers at Douglas, Wyo. She accompanied Charles Starweather on a reckless 500-mile automobile flight from Lincoln, Neb., where the two were wanted by authorities in connection with nine grisly killings. Among the dead were Caril’s mother, stepfather and their 2-year-old daughter.
