Governor candidates

Six Republicans are seeking their party's nomination for governor in a high-stakes showdown in the May 13 primary election.

The crowded GOP field reflects the first opening in the governorship in 16 years. Mike Johanns was elected in 1998 to succeed Gov. Ben Nelson as Nelson completed his two-term limit.

Jon Bruning

Bruning says he wants to build on the legacies of Gov. Dave Heineman and, before him, Gov. Mike Johanns, in focusing on tax cuts, spending reductions and economic growth. Bruning has been attorney general for 12 years and before that served six years in the Legislature.

Tom Carlson

Carlson says his eight years in the Legislature, along with 30 years of experience as a partner in a small business in rural Nebraska, has prepared him to be governor.  Carlson points to his knowledge of agriculture and water issues, and says he would work to lower property, income and county inheritance taxes while broadening educational opportunities.

Mike Foley

Foley says his eight years as state auditor have provided "excellent preparation for service as governor because of the deep knowledge of state government operations that one gains in this position." Foley, who previously served in the Legislature for six years, says he wants to reform and streamline state government.

Beau McCoy

McCoy says he wants to "pick up where Governor Heineman will leave off, focusing on cutting taxes, controlling state spending, growing good-paying jobs and providing quality education for the next generation of Nebraska's leaders."  McCoy says his record during six years in the Legislature demonstrates a commitment to fiscal and social conservatism.

Pete Ricketts

Ricketts says he is "a real-world conservative with a track record of success in the private sector," and that experience prepares him to be a governor who would "help bring down costs, reduce taxes and grow new economic opportunities in each region of our state."  Ricketts is former chief operating officer of Ameritrade.

Bryan Slone

Slone says he wants to "fundamentally reform our tax code, reduce the burdens of government, and lower taxes to create a better business climate in order to grow our economy, whether in farming, manufacturing or other industries." Slone, who says he has the broadest tax knowledge and tax reform experience among GOP candidates, said he also would focus on education and strategic infrastructure investment.

Governor

Chuck Hassebrook and Pete Ricketts are locked in a high-profile battle for the governorship that has centered on sharp policy differences.

Ricketts won a hotly contested six-man scrap for the Republican nomination in the May 13 primary election.  Hassebrook sailed to the Democratic nomination unopposed.
