Sandhillers' worry: 'What are the hills going to look like when they get done?'

Sandhills

Many Sandhillers feel the need to safeguard the unique ecosystem in north-central Nebraska, but others feel the need to diversify landowners' revenue with economic projects like wind farms and pipelines.

Cattle graze on a July day on the Hutchinson Organic Ranch near Rose.

The R-project transmission line would run through Ballagh Ranch and one mile north of the ranch headquarters, which is about 25 miles north of Burwell

The R-Project transmission line would require removing the shelter belt on the Ballagh Ranch, and would stand in water for over a mile, according to Amy Ballagh.

The R-Project transmission line would run along where the water is near the top of this photo, according to Amy Ballagh, whose family's ranch is about 5 miles north of Burwell.

The Grande Prairie Wind Farm near O'Neill in Holt County is said to be the largest in Nebraska.

Dragonflies are abundant on the Hutchinson Organic Ranch near Rose.

Dave Hutchinson and his wife, Sue, moved to the Sandhills from Lincoln when they were in their 20s. They have worked on their organic ranch to protect the land and their animals, but they fear the intrusion of wind farms, power lines and pipelines.

ROSE -- The first thing you notice on Dave Hutchinson's Sandhills ranch on a July day are the dragonflies -- so many dragonflies.
