Brady Stuckey's flood 1973

The Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppe and Texaco gas station at Brady’s Interstate 80 exit can be seen in this front-page Telegraph photo on May 14, 1973, showing the impacts of a major Platte River flood. Authorities were forced to cut the main access road between Brady and I-80 (Nebraska Highway L-56D) to let floodwaters flow through and save businesses at the interchange.

Stuckey's board game

A key attraction for children stopping at Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppes in the 1970s was the “Happy Highways” game, an in-car board game featuring a colorful board and detachable cards. This one, made in about 1971, was found online through an antique shop in Tennessee — though the game cards were missing.

This former Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppe at Interstate 80’s Odessa Exit 263, nine miles west of Kearney, is one of three one-time Stuckey’s still standing in Nebraska. The Lucky Stop Casino now operates there.

Stuckey’s, which began in 1937 by selling pecans and pecan candies, grew to nearly 400 stores across 41 states by the 1970s before the chain faded. The modern Stuckey’s Corp. is seeking to rebuild its national presence by selling its classic treats online and at retailers such as Bomgaars.

More than 4,000 billboards like this one once stood along U.S. interstates, urging motoring families and their restless children to stop at one of nearly 400 Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppes. Two of them once stood on each side of Interstate 80 near the Brady exit, promoting the Stuckey’s at the northeast corner of the interchange.

Brady Stuckey's site

Cross-country traffic still zips past the one-time Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppe at Interstate 80 Brady exit, 20 miles east of North Platte.

The front cover of a Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppe matchbook available at the chain’s nearly 400 U.S. stores in 41 states in the mid-1900s.

Hamburgers, french fries and Coca-Cola were among the meals available at Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppes in the 1970s. The chain’s menu also boasted a 99-cent breakfast and a three-piece chicken dinner, among other offerings.

Stuckey’s 1971 “Happy Highways” game took children on a colorful journey back and forth on a winding road — with three Stuckey’s stops along the way.

The files of today’s Stuckey’s Corp. contain this 1980s photo of the former Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppe at the Roscoe exit on Interstate 80, seven miles east of Ogallala.

This former Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppe at Interstate 80’s Odessa Exit 263, nine miles west of Kearney, is one of three one-time Stuckey’s still standing in Nebraska. The Lucky Stop Casino now operates there.

The offices of Nebraska Truck Repair now occupy the former Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppe building at the Seward exit on I-80, 20 miles west of Lincoln.

Stephanie Stuckey, granddaugher of Stuckey’s Corp. founder W.S. “Sylvester” Stuckey Sr.
